An Ema Marx Novel Book One

by J.D. Brown

Cover Designer: Delilah K. Stephans

Urban Fantasy

“You’re a vampire” is so not what Ema Marx wants to hear when she wakes from a two-day coma in a cryptic yet exquisite castle in northern Finland. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like why she’s able to see in the dark and walk through solid objects. What she doesn’t understand is why the other vampires expect her to have all the answers. It’s their fault she turned into one of them…right?

Jalmari’s hatred for his old-man intensifies when he’s ordered to bring that troublesome girl to their castle. He has a clan to run; there’s no time for babysitting newborn vampires no matter how they were converted to their culture. But when a two-thousand-year-old premonition threatens to take the crown and his life, Jalmari sees no other choice than to take out the catalyst, Ema Marx. Fortunately for Ema, she could also be the clan’s only savior.

Yowee!! Party time. Welcome. Tables are sagging under the weight of Baklava and forbidden fruit and not a wet noodle in sight. Cheers everyone. Grab a glass -there's barrels and bottle and juices galore. Help yourself

Edith Parzefall said...

Congratulations Lea, Charlotte, Killarney, Maxine and J.D. What a great cocktail of books. Wish you great success with all of them and many enchanted readers!

Edith Parzefall said...

I've already had lunch, Wendy. So how about a glass of bubbly to celebrate the new releases? :-)

Wendy said...

Hi Edith,
Great to see you here. Sure bubbly it is. How about a plate of oh so sticky baklave. It's yum.

Anita Davison said...

Congratulations to all the new releases. What an exciting time for you all and hope you get lots of sales.

Edith Parzefall said...

Oh yes, Wendy, some of that sticky sweet baklave should go well with the bubbly. And a toast to Muse! Cheers!

Hi Anita,
Glad to see you here. Is Elizabeth Murray with you? She'll want some
old English fare won't she. The is a medieval table over here. Will
you try mulled win?

Yes Edith, it tastes fantastic. Did you bring a barrel of something.
Wendy

Charlotte Babb said...

Thanks for having the party for us! I am so thrilled I can hardly type. My best friend sent me a copy of her receipt this morning because she wanted to be the first one to buy my book.

Now to find the chocolate fountain and a coffee cup!

Pat McDermott said...

Congrats to the authors of the latest batch of fantastic MIU releases - Lea, Charlotte, Killarney, J.D. and Maxine. Pink champagne all around!

Wendy said...

Oh Charlotte, what a wonderful friend you have to share your joy. My heart is thumping at that thought.

Hi Pat, Pink Champagne and some Baileys for a chaser. I think the comments are working since i upgraded blogger. :)

Wendy said...

Yeah!!
I don't care what anyone says, I'm going to drink the water and see what happens and I probably won't go to bed tonight. It's after 1am here

Viviane Brentanos said...

Did someone mention baklava? I'm in and I shall bring along some souvlaki and retsina for goos measure. Well done to all the new releasers. {sounds as if you have all just got out of prison}

Viviane Brentanos said...

as you can see from my typing, I have been at the retsina already.

Wendy said...

Hi Vivianne,
Lovely of you to bring all these wonderful dishes. Please pass the souvlaki and I'll have some retsina for goos measure, too. hic

MuseItUp Publishing said...

POPS: Party! Party! Party! So, where you guys keepin' all the cool squirrel chicks for me, eh?

BUTCH: Pops, this isn't an escort service.

JINX: As if an escort service would help the loser...heheheheh

POPS: Get lost, Shorty, no one invited you to the party. Scrammola!!

MuseItUp Publishing said...

Thank you, Wendy, what a wonderful surprise. I see Rock of Realm's characters have popped in. I'll try to make sure they behave...no promises, however. LOL

Pat McDermott said...

My late mother-in-law made fabulous baklava, Syrian style, with rosewater sugar syrup instead of honey. I'm happy to try the Greek style. And the retsina too!

Wendy said...

Hi Lea, Congratulations on your book launch! I see Pops, Butch and Jinx have jump off the page. Welcome you guys and you can misbehave all you like.
Jinx, you are most welcome. Would you like to mind the little squirrels.

Pat, I wish we had some real baklava. My mouth is watering. The stickiest I can come to it is Pavlova and I'll have a big wedge of that.

Maxine Douglas said...

Morning everyone! Thank you Wendi for having us here today. I hope everyone checks out Knight to Remember; also go to my Facebook page (author.maxine.douglas) and tell me which medieval recipe sounds the yummiest. I'll draw a winner at 6:00pm CST (3/30/12) from the comments.

Hugs,
Maxine

Edith Parzefall said...

Did someone say Restina? Yum... Here's a barrel of German beer. I'm so glad it weighs so little in cyberspace!

Cheryl said...

Sticking my nose in just for a minute. Still spooked from the last party!

Congrats to all! All the covers are great but, Charlotte, your cover really stands out!

Edith Parzefall said...

Cure nose, Cheryl. :-) And yes, the Maven Fairy Godmother is really amazing. I'd have to pick it up and peek inside if I spotted it in a bookstore.

Edith Parzefall said...

Hic, too much resttsiiianats. Meant 'cute nose' of course. Doesn't need any curing!

Wendy said...

Roll out the barrel, Edith!!

Hi Debbie and Cheryl. Isn't it lovely and crowded in here. Try not to trip over Jinx.
I see you are helping yourselves to the food. Debbie, I heard of people bringing a plate but a whole Facebook page of medieval recipes, that's amazing. Now that tops the cake hahaha.
I'm going over there to pinch some for our medieval table.

Cheryl you are quite safe here for a while. It is sleeping time here in Oz but I imagine Rosalie will drop by in the morning. She's the one who stirs up the creepy characters. :)

Killarney said...

Thanks Wendy! Phew, I finally made it in here. (: I sooo needed a party right now as I have been buried in non stop edits with muse it seems for the last year. I am pleased to say I am close to finishing edits on my 8th muse release so only my 2013 one left to go! Whew! Actually I love edits. (: Did someone say Baklava? I am dying to try that. (:

Edith Parzefall said...

Where did Jinx go to? I'm so easily jinxed, better hide. Or maybe I need a sip of that mulled wine? Hm...

Wendy said...

Hey Killarney! Party on, girl! We could do with some choc fudge icecream. Oh look out behind you. Your sweet Courtesan just stepped on the Fairy Godmother's troll and the knight has drawn his sword.
The squirrel's are loose and Pops is chasing. Butch trip Pops, quickly.

Oh I'll have a pina colada with a cherry on top.

Anonymous said...

Congrats, everyone! I'm just here to steal the cookies. :D :D

Edith Parzefall said...

Just read the Maven excerpt. Absolutely hilarious. :-) Great job, Charlotte!

Wendy said...

Hi Adrianna, Air kisses. Biscuits? when you can have some of Lea's cheesecake hehehe, Btw ignore the message I just sent. It is irrelevant now :)

Are you wearing your special pendant. There's a knight and a troll so you'd better be careful if you put it on. hehehe.

Edith, of course, you love fractured fairy tales. How is your series coming along. Particularily the one were you mention me? :)

Charlotte Babb said...

Thank you Edith! Tell me about your fractured fairy tales.

Wendy said...

Charlotte, I'm sure Edith will be back soon she has fractured her fairytales with modern day characters. Very clever.

Dear day people can you please carry on here and chat to each other. I'm just going to climb into the rose covered hammock and have a Nana Nap -It's 3am and I have to take Spitzli to obedience school at 8:30am

Wendy said...

If anyone is friends with Danielle can you give her a shout please. I tried to contact her on FB but the party might end before she sees the message and I'd love to include her JD that is.

Edith Parzefall said...

Hey Wendy, that's a great series title and so fitting. Fractured Fairy Tales, yep, sometimes bones, sometimes hearts get fractured. ;-)

Rapunzel Plan is set in the Alps, Cinderella Conspiracy on Tenerife. I can't wait to take the tourguide from hell and the control freak manager to Australia where they are quite likely to meet some strange folks. ;-)

Edith Parzefall said...

Maybe Spitzli should take Wendy to obedience school so she'll learn not to party all night. Oh no, what an idea. Where would that leave us? I bet Jinx put these words into my keyboard.

Wendy said...

Edith, I heard that. Kindly step away from my hammock or your tour guide and manager will give me nightmares. snore.

Edith Parzefall said...

OOooops, sorry Wendy! Sweet dreams!

Nancy Bell said...

Congrats to all the new releases. Watch out for Storm, the black dog from my soon to be released novel Christmas Storm, she has puppies in tow and a sore leg. She is on the look out for any tasty morsels that might drop on the floor. ( or be too close to the edge of the table) Storm is hoping her people, Michelle and Cale will show up soon. Where's Chubby Blue Elephant? The puppies want to play.

Nancy

Chubby Bubby Blue's Poem of love to Wendy.

Perched upon a Rock of Realm

The Maven Fairy Godmother- sat at the helm

Gazing -Through the Veil

At a Knight to Remember

He grants A Dark Heirloom of Splendor

To A Courtesan's Desires, and surrenders. The end.

Unknown said...

Chubby Bubby Blue words of wisdom:

Ignore those "Don't Feed The Elephants" signs out there. We consider that cruel and unusual punishment.

Can I have a cookie? Nancy mentioned Christmas so a Christmas Cookie would be fine.

Edith Parzefall said...

Absolutely lovely, Karen! :-)

Here's a gigantic Christmas cookie. Catch!

Unknown said...

Thank you Edith! Chubby was so happy with his creativity.

Now he's your friend forever for the praise but most of all...that cookie. hehehe

Hugs my friend.

Edith Parzefall said...

Great catch, Chubby. What a poet you are! Here's a small cookie for you, Karen. :-) And help yourself to mulled wine, retsina, pink champagne, German beer... What's left of all that. I'm sure Wendy has more stashed.

Unknown said...

Personally *looks at Lea* I think SOMEONE should give free access to all the cheesecake today. I'm not saying who, *glances again at Lea* but she should celebrate her new release by sharing.

Just sayin'

Edith Parzefall said...

I see Chubby sniffed out the cheesecake for you. I might have a piece too before Lea returns, then sign off quickly. ;-)

Charlotte Babb said...

Edith, that sounds like tons of fun. I don't know the terrain--have heard of the Alps and Australia, of course--but I do have a friend in Zurich. I can visualize her swinging on someone's golden hair...hers is dark with a wisdom streak.

Charlotte Babb said...

Karen Cote, love the poem! I can see the Courtesan wrapped in the Veil like Scarlett O'Hara, and the knight tripping over Maven's wand.

Unknown said...

Ah Edith. I LOVE that we have the place all to ourselves right now. Look at Chubby taking bites out of everything. He's having a blast! Of course, he'd better be careful not to wake Wendy. Although under the table, she can still hear what's going on.

Ouch! Chubby Blue! You stop throwing baklave. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you can throw it at people. Now behave.

Unknown said...

Hi Charlotte!!! Be warned. Chubby might try to show some affection to congratulate you on your fabulous new release. He loves these parties and since you're one of the guests of honors, he might try to suck up.

Edith Parzefall said...

Welcome back, Charlotte. :-)

All my stories are set in more or less exotic places. Strays of Rio is set in Rio de Janeiro, Crumple Zone in Chile. Both to be published by MuseItUp, in September and February. These two are independent of the Fractured Fairy Tales.

Edith Parzefall said...

Hey, Karen, better keep Chubby away from the beer barrel or he might douse Charlotte with it in celebration!

Unknown said...

Chubby likes...get this... chocolate milk. hehehe. Last year he kept chasing cows because he thought chocolate milk came from them.

Oh and Chubby corrected me. It's Baklava. Sorry guys.

Edith Parzefall said...

Hehehe, I bet the cows were brown. Makes complete sense. I'll collapse on the sofa now. Too much good stuff. Party on!

Maxine Douglas said...

ORIGINAL RECEIPT:

153. Frytour blaunched. Take almaundes blaunched, and grynde hem al to doust withouten eny lycour. Do þerto poudour of gyngeuer, sugur, and salt; do þise in a thynne foile. Close it þerinne fast, and frye it in oile; clarifie hony with wyne, & bake it þerwith.

- Hieatt, Constance B. and Sharon Butler. Curye on Inglish: English Culinary Manuscripts of the Fourteenth-Century (Including the Forme of Cury). New York: for The Early English Text Society by the Oxford University Press, 1985.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GODE COOKERY TRANSLATION:

Take almonds blanched, and grind them all to dust without any liquid. Do there-to powder of ginger, sugar, and salt; do this in a thin foil. Close it there-in fast, and fry it in oil; clarify honey with wine, & bake it there with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INGREDIENTS:

Finely ground almonds
Ginger - the powdered spice, not the fresh root.
Sugar
Salt - use to taste.
Pastry dough
Oil
Honey
Wine - red or white & slightly sweet.
DIRECTIONS:
Mix almonds with sugar, ginger, and a little salt - this should be a sweet, slightly spicy blend. Roll out the pastry dough. You may now make the pastry several different ways: by cutting out circles of dough, placing filling in the middle, and folding into a half-circle; by cutting out circles, squares, or triangles of pastry, placing filling in the middle of one piece and then covering with another piece of dough and sealing the edges; or by making small stuffed squares or rectangles, egg-roll style. In any case, make sure the edges of the pastry(ies) are securely sealed. Fry the pastry(ies) in hot oil until lightly browned; remove from oil and let drain. In a pot, bring the honey to a soft boil, then reduce heat. Skim off the scum as it rises. Add just enough wine to make a thick sauce. Thoroughly coat the pasty(ies) in the wine sauce, then place on a baking sheet. Bake in a hot oven for several minutes. The pastry(ies) may be basted with additional sauce during baking or immediately afterward.

Enjoy!
Maxine (Debbie)

Hellooooooooooo Stretches. Where's the coffee?

You lovely night people need your rest now that I'm a day person. Thanks you for mingling.

Hi Nancy, so glad you brought Storm and her pups. Sorry about Storm's sore leg. Spitzli can sympathize -her knee is playing up again.

Wendy said...

So glad you were able to get through that magic veil covering the garden gate, Karen. I wonder if Lea's magic in Rock of Realm helped to lift it? Or Chubby Bubby Blue might have pushed his way through. Yes! Thanks how we got the gate open again.

Oh Chubby what a beautiful poem. You are such a sweet little fellow and so clever. :) Do you realize you just managed to get the knight to sheath his sword. I was so worried about. :)

Chubby the Swiss Christmas Cookies Spitzbuebs are at the end of my blog home page. See them? They have jam inside. Spitzli will share them with you. The name means scallyway or rascal. Suits you very well. hehehe.

Karen, I hope you found the 'forbidden fruit' next to the rasberry caramel torte. It's the one marked 'don't touch'. Oh it's all gone. Guess you found it okay. :)

Maxine I'll have some of your Frytour blaunched, please. Is this the armond filled pasteries. Just the thing to go with my coffee. MMm hmmm yum. I have a stash of Pynade from your place too. Might share that around if anyone else is here. Or maybe not --hehehe -- I like it.

Good morning Rosalie. I'm off to take Spitzli to training. She refused to sit and drop at the Mock trial so we failed dismally and I walked in a crooked line and yelled 'stop' instead of 'stand' and the judge thought she was attacking another dog in the ring when she went too close and sniffed it so he wouldn't let me stay out front with the others in the long drop. I had to stand next 'to the schnauzer and keep watching her all the time. Do not take your eyes off her' so I guess we failed that too. She was perfecr in the long sit . Oh how disappointing. I'd rather play with her inside my stories.

Story land is so less embarrassing than real life. hehehe

Wendy said...

What a good idea Killarney!! I will look up the answer but I won't say.

And we'll keep the garden gate open all night and day to give everyone a chance to wake up and have a look. I have to pop out for a while but you lot are such good minglers I'm sure you'll keep the magic going.

Rosalie Skinner said...

*yawn* Goodness, what a racket. Something smells soooo good. I am starving. It's taken me days to find my way through the hedge. I think I was lost in the Rock of Realm. Imagine being without internet while one of Wendy's parties is in full swing.
So.. now to make up for lost time.
Hi everyone... CONGRATULATIONS.. Lea, Charlotte, Killarney, Maxine and JD... may your books never go out of print!!
PARTY ON!!!

Maxine Douglas said...

I believe so Wendy ... let me know if they're good. LOL

2 hours left for you to get in on a free copy of Knight to Remember. Just go to my FB page and look over the 10 recipes, let me know which one you like the best and why. I'll pick a winner from the comments.

Enjoy!
Maxine

Rosalie Skinner said...

Spitzli! Goodness, she's blotted her copybook. Not mentioning any names, but perhaps Chubby Bubby, Jinx, Pops, Butch, Storm and her pups... and the collection of characters she meets here in the garden are influencing her behaviour?
Don't stress. She's still queen of the garden.
I bought a supply of forbidden fruit. At least she can behave perfectly in your novels and she does play a great hostess here.

Whee.. recipes.. chance for free books.. what a wonderful day this is.

Unknown said...

Oh-Oh - Love + Monkey = Thoroughbred Stallion

hehehe. Loved that game.

MuseItUp Publishing said...

POPS: Yio, Lea...that Boobette chick is eating your cheesecake.

JINX: Tattleteller!

LEA: That's fine, Pops. Karen's a friend of mine and everyone here is celebrating. I can do without a piece of cheesecake.

ALEXANDRA STONE: Lea, I still can't figure out why you placed us all in danger like that...

POPS: Yeah, those Braks reek a mile away.

JINX: No, Poopyhead, that was your pee you held in for so long.

BUTCH: Pops!

POPS: I wasn't gonna use the knife on him...going for a piece of cheesecake, geez!

Jinx runs off...Pops runs off... Butch growls and chases the mad squirrel with a knife in his paw.

J.Q. Rose said...

With all these wonderful releases, a party is absolutely called for. Thanks for the invite and congratulations to one and all!! I'm sorry I cannot even look at all the wonderful festive food choices. I just got back from Golden Corral and am way too stuffed. But I love mixing in with all the authors and guests. Gloria Hart, Sunshine Boulevard

LMAO!!! There's the party girl. Goodness I love these parties.

Talent on Display - Unimaginable

Laugh Out Loud Humor - Guaranteed

Fun & Games - A Time Like No Other

Gracious Authors - In Abundance

You guys are the best. Thanks for brightening mine and Chubby's Friday and for all the amazing talent highlighted today.

Wendy...Chubby needs to know if he's still your favorite. He's sulking in the bushes because you mentioned a bunch of other "beings" at the party.

Rosalie Skinner said...

J Q... the other wonderful thing about Wendy's parties, is that there are no extra bulges at the end. All the cyber calories wear off as you stagger exhausted through the gate.
hehe.
At least that's what I hope, though, looking at how tight these jeans are today..hmm.
Baklava... might be the exception to the rule.

MuseItUp Publishing said...

Oh Rosalie, I have to disagree about the bulges. I read about cyber cheesecakes and goodies and then run off to the store to buy treats.

Killarney said...

LOL! Karen gets a free copy of A Courtesan's Desires! Now...where's the cheesecake? I'm trying to lose 20lbs but it doesn't seem to be happening...wonder why... (: Rachel from A Courtesan's Desires is here and brought a ton of wonderful tradition German Hutterite dishes with her, including potatoe dumplings which are her favorite. She's never tried cheesecake. (;

Unknown said...

YAY!!! Thanks my friend. Love the title, cover and blurb. I'm a lucky gal...

Rosalie Skinner said...

Oh dear oh dear.. as long as you 'run' out and buy treats... Lea, then I think that's ok. Hmm.
The thought of baklava, snickerdoodles, frytour, cookies, choc fudge ice cream and potato dumplings...I can feel my waistline expanding.

Congratulations Karen...Enjoy your read!!

Maxine Douglas said...

Edith ...

There's a present waiting for you in your email, honey. :)

Congratulations! Let me know if you try out any of the recipes.

Thank you to everyone for stopping by today. It's been great fun and my tummy is full of yummy food.

Enjoy,
Maxine

Unknown said...

Thanks for the lovely recipes Maxine!

I had to buy that portable button for my jeans...you know - the one where you can move it over ten inches to adjust to your girth...hehehe

Wendy said...

Hiii Janetttttt,
Gloria, if cyber calories can't temp you, how about a glass of water hehehe. Only a sip will turn you green hahahaha.

Lea, your family's acting up again. And I thought it was Pops we had to be aware of now it's Butch. Glad tou bought more cheesecake. The one I piched has gone :)

Rosalie lol 'run' out to buy treats lol. I'll bet Lea will be cooking baklava for her real family before long. It will come from her subconscious. hehehe. Subliminal thought.

Wendy said...

Congratulations Karen on answering Killarney's quiz question! I'm so happy you won her Courtesan's Desires. Now don't you get any ideas from it.

Chubby come over here so I can give you a quarter hug. Can't quite reach all the way round.

Rosalie Skinner said...

I am guilty of indulging in non cyber baklava while I was away. There is something about the crunchy sticky sweetness that attracts me.

Hehe.. mobile buttons on jeans. That's an idea.

I need to do some 'running' too. Although the temptation is to nap.

Off to celebrate a graduation today. No time for naps. MORE Celebrations are in order.

Unknown said...

Bye Lady Rosalie! Blow Chubby a kiss. We gotta go too. Have fun at your graduation.

*smooches*

Congratulations to all the authors published today at MuseItUp Publishing. May their books sell millions.

Twelve year old friends, Shane and Mitch, sat on Mitch's verandah.
"So Leanna is the best reader in class," said Shane. "We'll have to do something about that, Mitch.
"Yeah. Can't have Leanna gloating that girls are better readers than us boys."
"I've got Mum's E-reader. She's downloaded a book for kids called Rock of Realm plus a lot of other books from MuseItUp Publishing. Let's take it in turn to read a chapter aloud.
"Yeah. You read the first chapter and I'll lay back here and eat the apricots we picked from your tree.

Shane, Mitch and Leanna are characters from my book, the Battle of Boodicuttup Creek by Laurel Lamperd

Wendy said...

Hi Laurel,
Your 'kids' had better be careful, they could get lost in the magic of Rock of Realm and maybe get kidnapped by Pops, Jinx and crew. :) I don't think they'll mind to much. They'll have a lot of fun there, until you need them back home to battle for the cormorants and animals at Boodicuttup Creek :)

Rosalie Skinner said...
